Your ThoughtsKeep your comments coming! Pass the PeabutterYou had lots to say about our article on peabutter – and many of you wanted more clarification on the difference between peas, peanuts and nuts and how to know if NoNuts Golden Peabutter is safe for you. Here’s what we found out. Peas and peanuts are not nuts. While they are both members of the legume family (plants with seeds contained in pods), they are distinctly different. When people with either peanut or nut allergies ask Joe St Denis, developer and manufacturer of NoNuts Golden Peabutter, if they can eat his product safely, he answers, “Everyone with nut and peanut allergies is unique. Our product is produced in a nut-free facility, and if you can eat pea soup and food cooked in canola oil, then you should be able to eat Peabutter safely.” For more information about NoNuts Peabutter, Joe encourages people to visit the web site at www.peabutter.ca or contact their plant directly at (780) 961-2470. OrganicsAs a vegetarian, I was particularly interested in the article on care and handling of farm animals. I would like to know more about local producers and why organic vegetables are so expensive. K. Krismer – Edmonton I’m interested in organic food and what people are doing to be environmentally and animal friendly. J. Leitch – Jasper Publisher's Note: Through our regular feature, “Since you asked”, we tackle current issues like animal care, organics, GMOs and the environment. This issue takes a good look at organic food – what it is, how to know what you’re buying, and the standards guiding the industry in Canada. Nutrition and HealthI’d like some articles for diabetics. More information on healthy cancer-fighting foods please! I’d like to know more about nutrition and the health benefits of food. Publisher's Note: In this and future issues, we will be including regular columns that profile the latest research and information about food, nutrition, and how they affect diseases like cancer, diabetes and heart disease. We’d like to hear from you. Fill in our reader response card, or drop us an e-mail at info@growingalberta.com.
