Growing Alberta

A Message From Growing Alberta

I am a new face at Growing Alberta and I’m proud to be the editor of Alberta’s most popular agriculture and food magazine. And it’s nice getting to know you, via the reader response cards you send in daily. Like many of you, I am a city dweller with a strong farming background. My childhood memories are of sharing time with my grandmother, an Alberta farmstead pioneer, on her farm. We’d plant seeds and prepare many of our traditional recipes for family and friends from the products raised on the farm.

With the warm season here, I often think of those days. The crops are shooting through the soil, the flowers are in bloom and the calves are romping in the pastures. It’s summertime in Alberta and that’s reason enough to celebrate. But Summer 2007 also marks Food For Thought’s 20th issue, bringing the best of Alberta’s farms and kitchens to you.

We are fortunate to live in an abundant province. Whether we grow our own, visit the local farmer’s markets or travel to the many U-pick farms, we have the opportunity to prepare homemade products. So head out to the backyard barbecue with an armload of Alberta meats and veggies. And heed the advice of our grilling experts. They’ll tell you what a BTU is. (Hint: it’s not a new menu item.) Read about purple peppers and find out if it’s ‘bison’ or ‘buffalo.’ Either way, it’s totally delicious.

This summer issue takes you from the city to the country to enjoy the fresh air and discover some hidden treasures in rural Alberta. Take a detour to Delia, near Drumheller, and have a meal or a slice of pie.  Maybe you’d like to take in a rodeo. Whether it’s the Calgary Stampede or a smaller event, the cowboys are sure to entertain. Tour the barns and talk with our producers. You may even meet auctioneer Jack Daines, the most colorful character in Alberta’s livestock business. And you can read about him in the pages of this issue.

Celebrate the season by putting on your sunhat, slapping on some sunscreen and picking an Alberta destination to explore.
