Growing Alberta

Picture Perfect

Photograph by Kelly Evans

Peas that Please

Late one August afternoon last summer, Calgarian Kelly Evans took a series of photos at her grandparents' farm in Ardrossan.  Pictured above is her winning photo of her 83-year-old grandmother shelling a pea pod freshly picked from her garden.  "She has been a dairy/beef farmer for more than 60 years, and every summer grows the greatest garden you could ever imagine," says Evans.  "It was a very fond memory for me growingup, going to my grandma's farm and pciking fresh vegetables from her huge amazing garden.  I took these photos to remind me what a great woman she is and artistically show my appreciation for farmers and the hard-working people that they are."

Send us your photos

Send us your best photo and win $750! We are looking for photos that capture the spirit of Alberta's agriculture and food industry - from fields of wheat and farmers' markets to food preparation and fine dining. Photographs will be judged based on technical quality, creativity, composition and overall impact; one winning entry will be selected per issue.

E-mail your entries or questions to tpowell-surtees@albertaventure.com or mail them to Tamara Powell-Surtees, Venture Publishing, 201-10350 124 Street, Edmonton, AB, T5N 3V9. Click here for full contest details.

Correction - Please note, the photo below was incorrectly identified as wheat.  The photo is of a barley plant.  A correction notice will be printed in the Summer 2006 issue.
