Growing Alberta

Editor's Message

For the people in the business of producing, growing, raising the meat, vegetables, grains and other items available to you and your family, their effort to deliver safe and nutritious food is very personal one.  So as I sit down to write my very first editor’s message for a magazine all about the people and places of agriculture and food in Alberta, I am struck by how this letter to you, our readers, is also a very personal act.  While this letter is the most direct way in which I get to communicate with you, in many ways I feel like I have talking to you all along as we have been brainstorming ideas, capturing exciting photos and finalizing stories that we believe will enlighten and entertain your attention and imagination.

I was born and raised in a family where food always played a central and important role – even during our summer vacations.  My fondest memories involve getting into the family car, squishing into the backseat with my siblings, and hitting the open road to see all that Alberta has to offer.  You too can take an Alberta road trip this summer but this time with a foodie twist – check out the top 21 food and agriculture things to do this summer (page 20).  From corn mazes to u-picks, fairy berry festivals to cowboy poetry gatherings, every corner of this province has something tasty and western to offer.  When you are out on the highway, take time for a local Farmer’s Market. We share some of our market favorites (page 9)  but after just a few stops, we know you will soon develop many favorites of your own.

Summer just wouldn’t be summer without the backyard barbecue. Like most people, I am always on the lookout for something new to prepare or present.  On page 14, we provide some innovative ideas on how to make a traditional grilling dinner an international celebration – from food themes, to creative décor, to fresh food suggestions.  One ingredient no summer menu should be without this summer is Alberta’s famous Taber corn.   Find out on page 25 what makes it so it sweet and taste like no other.

In the midst of summer’s tastes and travels, we wouldn’t be Food for Thought if we didn’t address some of your pressing questions and concerns about the food you eat.  What is interesting in this all too instant information age is how quickly the lines between fact and fiction blur.  We asked the experts: do food labels really tell the truth about what’s in my food?  Does sugar cause diabetes?  Is organic food healthier? (page 30)  The truth may surprise you.

Take a little time this summer to get up close and personal with those who take your food and how it is produced very personally.  Travel safe and enjoy all of the food and agri-tourism Alberta has to offer.
