Growing Alberta

What is harvest to you?

Whether it’s the taste of fresh produce, fallen leaves, crisp autumn air or family gatherings, harvest time evokes a flood of memories. A few Albertans have their say about what harvest means to them.

Anne Kowalski
“When I was a child in Rocky Mountain House the harvest season fell around the end of the school year. Back then school would end before winter started. We’d do garden work and spend time with the family…the word also reminds me of the generosity of our neighbours, how everyone was so eager to help one another.”

Nick Savliuk

“This word reminds me of eating sandwiches with my mom outdoors. She’d bring food over to us while taking a break from working on the field, the family would just sit and enjoy one another’s company.”

Shwetab Gupta
“It means fun, the heralding of a new season, markets overflowing with fresh fruits and vegetables. In India, one of the harvesting events is called Baisakhi, a week long celebration of crop gathering, singing and dancing.”

Sabrina Kordula
“The word itself makes me a little hungry but I also think of how gratifying it must be to work with the crops and enjoy the openness of the farm.”

Brian Ogden
“What comes to mind is the phrase ‘as you sow, so shall you reap’…harvest means much more than just gathering produce, it’s a celebration of a person’s efforts in life and the fruits of labour that can be used for the good of mankind.”
