Gadgets for the kitchen

Story by Kate Leighton

Creative cooks will love these great finds available at kitchen stores across the province. Get equipped and get cooking!

Norpro Odor Remover

Tired of the smell of onions, garlic or fish on your hands after making dinner? The stainless steel Norpro Odor Remover is a compact, oval-shaped gadget that quickly gets rid of cooking smells from your hands. Use it like you would a bar of soap. Simply rub your hands over the bar under running water and the odours magically disappear.  Retail: $6.95.

Sil-Pin Silicone Rolling Pin

Fiesta Products’ new Sil-Pin silicone rolling pins make a fun and useful kitchen addition. Lightweight and available in colours like red, hot pink, tangerine, blue and black, they are easy to work with and stick-resistant, so you will use less flour when rolling out your pastry. Available in traditional, French and bakers’ sizes.  Retail: $45 to $58.

Silpat Silicone Baking Sheet

Greasing your cooking sheets can become a thing of the past with reusable silicone baking sheets by Silpat. They slip easily onto your cooking sheets and stop your baking from sticking. This easy-to-clean product also works well for kneading or rolling out sticky dough.  Retail: $30.

Mezzaluna

Chopping fresh herbs and vegetables is a breeze with a Mezzaluna from Nigella Lawson’s Living Kitchen collection. Used by both professionals and home cooks, the stainless steel mezzaluna has double contoured handles and a curved moon-shaped blade that creates a simple rocking motion to help you slice and dice with a few swift strokes.  Retail: $37.95.

Magnetic Milk Frother

The Magnetic Milk Frother from Stokes is the ultimate gift for any coffee lover. The frother consists of a small hand-held unit with a vibrating coil that lets you froth milk or whipping cream directly in a glass for great lattes, cappuccinos or hot chocolate. It’s also terrific for blending drinks, emulsifying salad dressings or even beating eggs for a fluffy omelette. The frother attaches magnetically to a chrome stand.  Retail: $12.99
