Growing Alberta

A Message from Growing Alberta

Shades of Alberta’s Autumn

Alberta has great festivals and, although the planning has already begun for next year’s summer events, many of us can still attend 2008’s fall festivals. A harvest of colour awaits you with events that include a pumpkin festival, corn mazes and, of course, Growing Alberta’s Annual Harvest Gala in Calgary. Likewise, this issue is a veritable harvest.

My fondest memories include digging my favourite veggie – the potato. The versatile spud, see page 7, is a staple of my Ukrainian heritage. You can buy your spuds, and many other seasonal vegetables, at local farmers’ markets into the fall season. Consumers can continue to purchase local products and meet the producers who maintain and grow an abundance of vegetables, meat and grain products.

Of course, weather, fuel costs and labour shortages are issues that impact farming. Albertans are just starting to feel the pinch of rising prices, so we’ve included an intro to the issue, plus advice for consumers. And because our readers are always interested in where their food comes from, we introduce you to Martin Van Diemen, an Alberta dairy and chicken producer who shares his passion for farming.

Fall also brings another school term. Busy parents know that food is the number one school supply for our kids!  A breakfast club is not a new sandwich, but a concept that means all Alberta students can start their school day right.

And, for dinner, take the easy way out. Learn shortcuts from the experts how to make nutritious meals in advance, to enjoy homemade goodness when you’re strapped for time. From renovations to winter getaways, you’ll find many other useful and cost-efficient tips in this issue.

I encourage readers to share photos, stories and comments with us. We’d love to get to know you as our dedicated staff prepares our upcoming issues. Don’t be shy.
