A Message From Growing Alberta

Harvest of Colour

The sizzling days of summer have passed and the cooler seasons are approaching

Families are returning to their routines. It’s time to clean the garden and store many of our homegrown veggies and fruits for the upcoming months and we’re happy to offer tips. In these pages, you’ll also get ideas for meal planning and lunch packing that will excite the younger members of your family.

A grandmotherly image is presented in our feature on Jean Pare, Alberta’s own successful cook-book author and head of publishing house Company’s Coming. As a working mother myself, I’ve had many an opportunity to use her recipes for easy-to-prepare, great meals.

Pare is no stranger to comfort food, and neither are we. Meet some Albertans who run for their favourites when the going is good or bad.

Growing Alberta is very pleased to partner with Dine Alberta for this issue and bring you a directory of Alberta restaurants that feature locally grown or produced items in their menu selections. For a change of pace, take the family out to dinner tonight and show your support for Alberta’s terrific growers, producers and chefs.

This issue, you’ll enjoy learning about the fish farms in Alberta, a high-technology dairy barn (self-serve cow stations!) and a rice farm in Athabasca.

Growing Alberta celebrates the fall season with the 10th Anniversary of Harvest Gala on October 26. It’s a sell-out event every year that recognizes our many sponsors and industry leaders, and it pays special tribute to the Growing Alberta Leadership Award winners.

It’s you, our readers, who continue to guide the contents of our popular magazine and these are just some of the features you asked for. Growing Alberta maintains the connection with our many industry organizations and we share your comments and ideas with them following each issue. As the editor, I welcome your comments and suggestions and hope you enjoy our fall issue.
