Editors MessageEVERYTHING WAS GOING WELL; ALBERTANS WERE feeling good about the future; then it happened. One lone cow infected with BSE disrupted Alberta’s world-class beef industry. While the incident has temporarily delayed progress in the beef industry, it’s taught us a great deal. We’ve had proof our government’s food safety and inspection system works; we’ve seen first hand, the vital role Alberta’s agriculture and food industry plays globally and we’ve felt the compassion and commitment of Canadians. The groundswell of support from consumers who’ve filled shopping carts and freezers has gone a long way to show the world you believe in the safety and quality of Alberta beef. Moreover, your outpouring of letters, community events and sheer moral support has given motivation and hope to the entire industry. Thank you. BSE has focused the world’s attention on the importance of food safety. Without a doubt, it is the single most important issue for anyone connected with the business of growing, producing, distributing and—consuming food. In this issue, we give you an inside look at Canada’s food safety system (Page 10) and knowing that you also have a responsibility for making safe food choices, we’ve talked to a few experts to find out how you can ensure food safety at a restaurant or with your next catered meal (Page 34). In true Food for Thought style, we’ve sprinkled in a bunch of savoury fall recipes to help you welcome autumn with flair. You’ll also find tips for healthy living and for kids—fun ways to give that school lunch bag a boost. So come inside and settle into the season of renewal and thanks. Jennifer Fisk
