Iron gives you energy – SuperCow shows you how

Did you know your body needs iron? This important mineral helps you grow, builds strong bones and muscles and keeps you full of energy. If you feel tired or cranky, sometimes it’s your body’s way of saying …
“More iron please!”

How do you get iron into your body? It’s like going to the gas station and fuelling up the family car except your body is the engine. You’ll find iron-rich food fuel in meat, chicken and turkey, raisins, spinach, multi-grain breads and cereals. These healthy foods pump important vitamins and minerals into your engine, making you run like a racecar.

Munch on these Munchster tacos

Here’s a fun and easy supper you can make for your family.

To make this supper, you’ll need to use the stove and some sharp tools. Be safe! Don’t start until you have an adult’s permission to cook alone, or have an adult helping you.

Ingredients:

  • 2 medium tomatoes
  • 4 – 6 oz. cheddar cheese (or a package of grated cheese, 112 – 168 g) 1 package taco shells
  • 1 lb. extra lean or lean ground beef
  • 1 package taco seasoning
  • 3/4 cup water
  • 1 head of lettuce
  • taco sauce and sour cream

Start by washing your hands!

Now, you’re ready for action.

Directions:

  1. Wash and dry the lettuce and tomatoes.
  2. Chop the tomatoes and place in a serving bowl.
  3. Tear the lettuce into small pieces and place in another bowl.
  4. Grate the cheese and put it into a bowl.
  5. Cook the ground beef in a skillet until it is completely brown. You shouldn’t see any pink at all. Drain off the fat.
  6. Add in the taco seasoning and water and keep cooking according to the package directions.
  7. Heat the taco shells following the directions on the box.
  8. Put the meat in a serving bowl.
  9. Remove the taco shells from the oven.

Build a bunch of barley bookmarks!

Did you know barley has a head? It’s the top of the barley plant and it is a spike of seeds that looks like it’s covered with hair. Farmers call the hair the barley’s beard!

Have fun making your own bunch of barley friends. All you need is your imagination and few simple craft supplies. To get started, find …

  • A piece of cardboard
  • Paper you can trace with Pencils or crayons
  • Wool, string or ribbon
  • Scissors, glue and a hole punch
  • Popsicle sticks (you may have to eat a few Popsicles first!)

Now, follow these easy steps…

  1. Trace the seed outline shown here and put it on a piece of cardboard
  2. Cut out the shape and put a hole in the top using the hole punch (or have an adult help poke a pencil through the top)
  3. Glue a Popsicle stick to the bottom
  4. Give your seed some hair by tying wool or string through the hole
  5. Draw a fun face, and give your barley buddy a wacky hairdo
  6. Give your buddy a name, and make some more!
